  Betsy King (aka, Betty Wong)

 

Betsy King, born in Hong Kong, began her dance training with Mr. Joseph Hung after she had joined the Hong Kong University’s Extra-Mural course in Chinese Mordern Dance and Music in 1984.  She studied Martha Graham and Laban techniques under the evening dance course at the Hong Kong Academy for Performance Arts.  She also studied under Mr. Willy Tsao, Mr. Daniel Maloney, Ms. Helen Lai, Mr. Miguel Angel Zermeno and Mr. Robert Fung for Modern Contemporary Dance.  She later studied under Ms. Hsu Mann-Lu & Ms. Mao Mei for ballet dance, and Chinese dance under Ms. Chu Kit.  She became the dancer of Han Hsiao Dance Company & Shatin Modern Dance Troupe.

She founded the “Consensus Troup” in 1987.  Not only the company’s chairman and instructor, she was also a dance teacher for modern dance, modern jazz, modern ballet, and Chinese dance at various community centers and organizations.

She has performed often since 1984, including “Peace Rally 1985”, “Fantasy”, “Horizon”, “Shadow Dancing and Encounter”, “Hymns to the Divinities, “My Hong Kong” (Broadway Dance), etc.  In the “Ninth Sha Tin Open Dance Competition”, Betsy received a “Silver” place for her first choreography.

In April of 1994, as a member of Mime Touch Theatre, Betsy was the producer of the show, Mime for All Ages – Earth Village, presented by the Regional Council of New Territories, Hong Kong.

Since 2009, Betsy begins to teach dancing at Kildare (Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education) School until 2020.  Betsy had taught Chinese dance at Multicultural Centre the same year.

In 2010, Betsy is the co-founder of “Alberta Chinese Dance Association”.  She is presently the Artistic Direction and Instructor of the Association, in order to continue promoting the performing arts and teaching concepts.
